Home > Alexandria > Potomac Yard
Potomac Yard, a former rail yard along Route 1 between Del Ray and Arlington's National Landing, has become one of Alexandria's fastest-changing neighborhoods. New townhomes, condos, offices, and a university campus now sit where freight trains once did. Browse Potomac Yard homes for sale.
What's here now
- Potomac Yard-VT Metro: The station opened on May 19, 2023, on the Blue and Yellow Lines between Reagan National Airport and Braddock Road. See what a home near Metro is worth in Alexandria.
- Virginia Tech Innovation Campus: Virginia Tech's graduate campus opened its first academic building in 2025, a short walk from the Metro station.
- Retail and parks: Shopping along Route 1 and the long, linear Potomac Yard Park with playgrounds and trails. See Alexandria's parks and trails.
What's still changing
North Potomac Yard is still being redeveloped. A proposed sports and entertainment arena for the site was dropped in 2024, and plans for the remaining land continue to evolve. Ongoing construction can mean noise and traffic for nearby residents, but it also brings new shops and services. See whether new development will raise home values in Alexandria and which areas of Alexandria are improving in value.
What you can buy here
- Townhomes: Many Potomac Yard homes are newer townhomes, often with garages and rooftop decks, in HOA communities. See Alexandria townhomes. Review HOA budgets and rules; see selling with a troubled HOA in Alexandria.
- Condos: Newer condo buildings near the Metro offer a lower entry price. See Alexandria condos.
The commute advantage
Potomac Yard is one Metro stop from Reagan National Airport and a few minutes from National Landing and the Pentagon. The Metroway bus rapid transit line also runs along Route 1. See the Alexandria commuter guide, the best commute to the Pentagon from Alexandria, and whether to rent or buy on a 2-year assignment.
Del Ray's main street is a short walk west; see living in Del Ray. For schools, see Alexandria City Public Schools, and for a different kind of redevelopment story, compare the West End.
