Summary answer: Honestly, "underrated" is becoming less accurate for Burke — U.S. News just named it the #1 Place to Live in Virginia in 2026, and the market's genuine competitiveness (77/100 "Strong" score) reflects that recognition. What remains genuinely true is Burke's value relative to McLean, Great Falls, or Vienna, which offer similar Fairfax County schools at significantly higher price points.

Getting to know Burke
Burke is a largely residential part of Fairfax County anchored by the planned community of Burke Centre, the Burke Centre VRE station on the Manassas line, and Burke Lake Park. The Fairfax County Parkway and nearby George Mason University shape daily life, and the housing mix leans toward townhomes and single-family homes built from the 1970s through the 1990s. When you compare homes here, look at how each one fits your daily routine: the drive or transit ride to work, the distance to shopping and parks, and the character of the surrounding streets. Those practical details often matter as much as the house itself.
Long-term potential versus short-term price
Buying in an overlooked area can offer both a lower entry price and room for appreciation as more buyers discover it. The key is choosing a home you'll enjoy even if prices rise slowly. For Burke buyers, focusing on solid homes near the Fairfax County Parkway and the Burke Centre VRE station gives you both daily convenience and a better chance of long-term value.
